4 Tips For Protecting Your Children During A Divorce

Law Blog

Getting a divorce is not easy for the spouses involved, but it can be really hard on children if both parents do not make an effort to make the transition as easy as possible. While you and your spouse may have made the decision to end your marriage, it is still very important to work together as much as possible to protect your children and minimize emotional and psychological side effects from the divorce. If you and your spouse are planning to file for divorce, use the following tips to help your children through it:

Don't Talk Bad About Your Spouse

If you and your spouse are divorcing, there is a good chance that there are major issues and possibly bad feelings between the two of you. But your issues with your soon to be ex should not be anything that your kids know about. No matter how you feel about your spouse, he or she is still one of your kids' parents, so the best thing you can do is avoid saying anything negative about him or her during the divorce process.

Keep a Consistent Schedule

When a divorce happens, it is not uncommon for both parents to move into new homes. Getting used to two new homes can be difficult for children, but you can help by keeping your household schedule consistent. Stay on top of meal times and bed times in order to help provide a sense of stability as you get used to your new normal.

Don't Fight in Front of the Kids

A divorce can bring out a lot of anger, and arguments are not uncommon. But if you have your kids' best interest in mind, avoid fighting with your spouse in their presence. If you and your spouse are not able to calmly communicate with each other in front of your kids, use e-mail or text messaging to discuss points of the divorce proceedings.

Put a Custody Agreement in Writing

Finalizing a divorce can take some time, but if you and your spouse are separated you will need to have a custody arrangement to ensure that bot parents get fair time with the kids. If possible, speak with your spouse about what type of arrangement works with each other's schedule, and most importantly, what is the best option for the kids. Make sure that your divorce attorney, like Karen Robins Carnegie PLC, gets the custody agreement in writing so there are no issues in the future.

Noni and the Accident

My name is Noni. When I was in college, I was hit by a car while crossing the street. My life was never in danger, but I did break a few bones and had a lot of huge medical bills. I was hoping I wouldn't have to get involved with an attorney, but unfortunately, it came down to that. I used a family friend who is an accident attorney to get some compensation. A few years later, I was hit while riding my bike and had to go through the same process. I suppose I'm lucky to be alive. And it's thanks to accident attorneys that I have been able to put my life back together. I started this blog as a way to let others know just how much lawyers can help you in certain situations.
