3 Tips For Hiring A Personal Injury Attorney

Law Blog

Many situations may require the services of a personal injury attorney. A personal injury attorney will represent your interests in a legal setting, whether you are dealing with medical malpractice, a car accident, or workplace injury. However, not all personal injury attorneys are the same. Your needs may be different from other plaintiffs, and you will need a personal injury attorney who can work with your case. Here are a few tips that can help you hire a personal injury attorney.

Meet With A Few Attorneys Before Committing

Before hiring a personal injury attorney, you will want to interview a few to find the best fit for your needs. First, doing some online research on attorneys in your area can help you develop a shortlist. Once you have a few candidates, you'll want to meet with potential personal injury attorneys. Most attorneys offer free consultations. Meeting in person makes it easier to get a feel for an attorney's experience level and to determine if they are the best fit for your needs.

Don't Be Afraid To Ask About Fees

Another tip to help you find the best personal injury attorney for your case is to ask about their fee structure early on. Personal injury attorneys mostly work on a contingency basis, meaning you need to know their fee structure before hiring them. Contingency fees are subtracted from your award or settlement and can range from 33 to 40 percent of that amount. However, that's not all you need to ask about. Court fees, expert witnesses, and other expenses must also be accounted for. You need to know whether you will be paying for these expenses up-front or if they will come from your settlement.

The Sooner, The Better

If you need a personal injury lawyer, hiring one sooner is better than later. Statutes of limitations impact most personal injury cases in one way or another. A statute of limitation is your deadline for taking legal action after you discover your injury. Personal injury cases can have statutes of limitations ranging from one to six years, depending on state law, and seeking out a personal injury attorney soon after your injury is your best bet.

If you are looking to hire a personal injury attorney, these tips can help. First, meet with a few personal injury attorneys before committing to one. Second, don't be afraid to discuss legal expenses and fee structures with an attorney. Finally, the sooner you hire a personal injury attorney, the better.

Noni and the Accident

My name is Noni. When I was in college, I was hit by a car while crossing the street. My life was never in danger, but I did break a few bones and had a lot of huge medical bills. I was hoping I wouldn't have to get involved with an attorney, but unfortunately, it came down to that. I used a family friend who is an accident attorney to get some compensation. A few years later, I was hit while riding my bike and had to go through the same process. I suppose I'm lucky to be alive. And it's thanks to accident attorneys that I have been able to put my life back together. I started this blog as a way to let others know just how much lawyers can help you in certain situations.
