Key Reasons You Need To Contact A Lawyer For A Minor Car Accident

Law Blog

It is not uncommon for someone to be involved in a minor fender bender and decide not to report the accident. This often occurs because the damage was minor or both parties agree to handle the situation on their own. However, neglecting to report an accident or call an attorney can cause you to regret it later.

Not reporting an accident may be illegal

Depending on the state you live in, failing to contact the authorities following an accident may be illegal. Once you drive away from the scene of the incident you could be liable. To be on the safe side, it is best to report any accident and follow up by contacting an attorney who specializes in auto accidents.

Delayed injuries

It is possible to feel fine following a minor accident only to wake up the next day with a stiff neck or sore back. Hidden injuries are not uncommon occurrences and can lead to lifelong problems that need medical attention or physical therapy. If you fail to report an accident, you may be denied medical insurance coverage if you develop health problems.

The adrenaline people experience at the time of an accident may mask minor pain or discomfort. You may think the stiffness you are experiencing is just due to feeling anxious or tense about the accident. Even if you do not experience symptoms of an injury, it is recommended you be checked out by a physician.

The other driver

Just because the other driver involved in the accident seems nice at the scene, you really have no way of knowing if this person is going to contact their insurance company or the authorities later. This is especially true if they develop a delayed injury or find some damage upon closer inspection of their vehicle. It is not unheard of for someone involved in an accident to get a court summons weeks later because the other person decided to report the incident.

Contacting a lawyer helps protect you from the actions the other driver may take in the future. Even if the accident was their fault, they may exaggerate what happened for their benefit. A good accident attorney will help you work through the details if this happens.

No matter how minor an accident is, working with a car accident attorney will help you protect your rights. An attorney can guide you through the process if any events should occur following the accident. You will not have to wonder what the other person is doing because your attorney will be able to manage issues if they arise.

Noni and the Accident

My name is Noni. When I was in college, I was hit by a car while crossing the street. My life was never in danger, but I did break a few bones and had a lot of huge medical bills. I was hoping I wouldn't have to get involved with an attorney, but unfortunately, it came down to that. I used a family friend who is an accident attorney to get some compensation. A few years later, I was hit while riding my bike and had to go through the same process. I suppose I'm lucky to be alive. And it's thanks to accident attorneys that I have been able to put my life back together. I started this blog as a way to let others know just how much lawyers can help you in certain situations.
