3 Tips For Protecting Your Inheritance

Law Blog

Once you inherit a large amount of money, you need to do everything possible to protect your inheritance. Many battles have been fought in court because people did not legally protect their assets.

The good news is that there are some key things that you can do to prevent this from happening to you. When you have any form of inheritance, it is important that you make sure that it is protected. Here are some key steps that you should take to protect your inheritance.

Sign a Pre-Nup

When you decide to get married and you have a large inheritance it is always a good idea to sign some kind of pre-nuptial agreement to protect your assets. You need to make sure that it is clearly documented that any money that you have or any money that you will receive from interest on your inheritance belongs solely to you. Unfortunately, some marriages end in divorce and you want to make sure that you are protected.

Also, try to keep your assets separate throughout your marriage, especially your inheritance.

Keep Documents Safe

There are likely a lot of legal documents that come along with your inheritance. You should make sure that these documents are kept in a safe and secure place. You should have documents readily available at all times that showcase who you got your inheritance from, how the inheritance was received, and the exact date you received it.

Hire a Good Lawyer

Your inheritance may be something you want to pass on to your children. To make sure that your assets are protected and that your estate is in order, hire a lawyer. Going it alone is never a good idea. You need to make sure that you have an ironclad will and if possible put money in a trust for your children.

During your estate planning you also need to make sure that you stipulate what should happen with regard to your healthcare and assets should you become incapacitated at any time and be unable to watch over your estate.

Protecting your inheritance should always be a priority for you. It is not just important for yourself but for your family members as well. Taking the time to hire a professional to deal with legal aspects such as pre-nuptial agreements, proper recording, and the planning out of your estate for your children is a necessary step to protect your inheritance.

Noni and the Accident

My name is Noni. When I was in college, I was hit by a car while crossing the street. My life was never in danger, but I did break a few bones and had a lot of huge medical bills. I was hoping I wouldn't have to get involved with an attorney, but unfortunately, it came down to that. I used a family friend who is an accident attorney to get some compensation. A few years later, I was hit while riding my bike and had to go through the same process. I suppose I'm lucky to be alive. And it's thanks to accident attorneys that I have been able to put my life back together. I started this blog as a way to let others know just how much lawyers can help you in certain situations.
